How do you rank in Google's AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are the block of generated text that now sits above the ordinary results for a lot of questions. Appearing in one is less mysterious than it looks.

Ranking is the entry requirement

Overviews are largely built from pages Google already considers good answers for that query. So the path in runs through ordinary search performance rather than around it.

This is good news and bad news. Good, because it means the work is work you already understand. Bad, because there is no shortcut that skips it.

Then be the easiest thing to quote

Among pages that rank, the ones pulled into overviews tend to share a shape. The question is asked plainly, and the answer follows immediately and completely.

Pages that spend four paragraphs establishing context before answering get passed over for pages that just answer. Same information, different order, different outcome.

Be specific rather than broad

Overviews trigger most on questions with a definite answer. Broad topic pages rarely get pulled, and narrow question pages frequently do.

For a local business that means a page answering one real question outperforms a page covering a whole service area of a topic.

The trade you are accepting

It is worth being clear-eyed. If the overview answers the question completely, the reader has no reason to click through, and traffic to that page falls.

What you get instead is being named as the source at the moment somebody forms an opinion. For a local business deciding who to call, that is often worth more than the visit. But if your reporting only counts sessions, this will look like a loss while being a gain.

What about blocking it

You can largely opt out, and it usually costs you the ordinary results too. For nearly every local business that is a bad trade.

The more useful response is to write pages that are easy to quote and to accept that some questions will now be answered without a visit. More on the traffic side in what to do when overviews take your clicks.

Common questions

How do I get my website into Google's AI Overviews?

Overviews are largely assembled from pages Google already ranks well for the query, so conventional ranking is the entry requirement rather than a separate track. On top of that, the pages that get pulled tend to answer the question directly and early rather than burying it.

Do AI Overviews reduce website traffic?

They can, because a question fully answered in the overview gives the reader no reason to click. That is the trade: you gain visibility and attribution, and you lose some of the clicks you would previously have had.

Should I try to block AI Overviews?

Blocking generally means removing yourself from the results underneath as well, which is a bad trade for almost every local business. Being visible without a click is still better than being invisible.

What kind of content gets used in AI Overviews?

Direct answers to specific questions, written plainly. Pages structured as a question with a complete answer immediately below get pulled far more readily than pages that arrive at the answer eventually.
