AEO: Same work. Different target

AEO

Is AEO different from SEO, or just a rebrand?

The short answer is that AEO is not a new discipline, and it is also not nothing. Both of the confident positions on this are wrong.

What has not changed

A page still has to be reachable, load properly, and be credible enough to be worth quoting. Assistants are not sourcing answers from sites that search engines cannot read either.

So the fundamentals are the same fundamentals. If your site is slow, thin, or has never answered a real question, no amount of answer engine work will rescue it. That is the part being oversold.

What genuinely changed

The result you are competing for is different. A search result is a link, and the click is the win. An assistant's answer is a paragraph, and being named in it is the win, whether or not anybody clicks.

That has a real consequence for how you write. A page that builds an argument across two thousand words and lands the answer at the end works fine for a reader and badly for an assistant, because the assistant is looking for a passage it can lift whole.

Write the answer first

The single most useful change is structural. Ask the question as a heading, then answer it completely in the next paragraph, in a way that makes sense with none of the surrounding page attached.

Then elaborate underneath for the humans. You lose nothing, because a reader who wanted the short answer got it faster.

Consistency across sources

The other real change is that assistants weigh whether your facts agree with themselves across the internet. If your address, service area, and description of what you do differ between your site, your Google profile, and every directory you are listed in, that inconsistency is a reason to trust you less.

This is unglamorous work and it is genuinely worth doing.

What to be sceptical of

Anyone quoting a precise ranking factor for AI answers is guessing. The systems are not documented the way search ranking is partially documented, and they change without notice.

Anyone selling AEO as a separate product alongside SEO is charging twice for one job. It is the same work with a wider target, and it should be quoted that way. More on what answer engine optimisation actually is.

Common questions

Is AEO just a rebrand of SEO?

Roughly eighty percent of the work is identical: be crawlable, be credible, answer the question properly. What genuinely changed is the target. SEO competes for a position in a list of links. AEO competes to be the passage an assistant repeats, which can happen with no click at all.

Do I need to do AEO and SEO separately?

No, and anyone selling them as two separate retainers is selling the same work twice. The sensible approach is one body of work with the answer-engine requirements folded in.

What actually changes in how you write for AEO?

Answers have to survive being lifted out of the page. That means saying the answer in full immediately under the question, in one self-contained passage, rather than building to it across six paragraphs.

Does AEO matter for a small local business?

It matters most for exactly the questions local businesses get asked. People increasingly ask an assistant who to call rather than searching and comparing, and the businesses named in that answer were not chosen at random.
