How do you get your business mentioned in Perplexity?

Perplexity is worth singling out, not because it is the biggest, but because it shows its working. That makes it the best diagnostic tool available for this whole subject.

Use it as a mirror first

Before trying to appear in it, ask it the questions your customers ask. What does it say when asked who to hire for your service in your city.

Then look at what it cited. Those sources are what a machine currently considers authoritative for your market, and the list is usually instructive. Frequently it is two directories and a competitor who happens to have written one useful page.

Work out why you are absent

There are only a few explanations, and the citations usually reveal which one applies.

It cannot fetch you, in which case check crawlers and host-level bot protection. It can fetch you but you never answer the question, in which case you have no quotable passage. Or it can fetch you and does not trust you yet, in which case you need corroboration from sources other than yourself.

Fix the sources that represent you

If a directory listing is being cited instead of your site, that listing is currently your public face. Make sure it is complete and accurate.

This is unglamorous and immediate. You do not need to displace the directory to benefit from it being right.

Then become a source

The durable move is to be the page that answers the question properly. Not a service page describing what you sell, a page that answers the actual question in plain language.

That is the same work described in the AEO checklist, and Perplexity is simply where you can watch it working.

Check it repeatedly

Answers change, sometimes week to week. One check tells you almost nothing.

Ask the same ten questions monthly and write down what comes back. It is the cheapest and most honest measurement in this field.
