Trades: Work there. Rank there

Local

How do contractors rank beyond their home city?

Very common in Alberta trades. You work from Edmonton across a wide area, and online you only exist in Edmonton.

Why it happens

Map results are heavily influenced by how close you are to the person searching, so from one address your reach into other towns is structurally limited. This is covered in how far you can actually rank.

Setting a wide service area does not fix it. That tells Google where you will travel, not where you appear.

The shortcut, and why not to

The tempting move is a virtual office or a relative's address in the target town, and a second profile.

It is against the rules, it is a well-documented cause of suspension, and the consequence is not limited to the fake listing. You can lose the profile your actual business runs on, which is a catastrophic trade for a marginal gain. See what suspension involves before considering it.

Route one: say where you work

The most under-done thing available. Name the towns explicitly. If you work in Leduc, Beaumont, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain and Fort Saskatchewan, list them by name.

Vague phrasing about serving surrounding communities gives search engines and assistants nothing to match against. It is a small change and it is frequently the difference between appearing for a town and being invisible in it.

Route two: pages with real substance

A page about your work in a specific town can rank, provided it is actually about that town.

That means real jobs you have done there with photographs, things specific to the place such as building age, common problems, permit requirements or drive time, and reviews from customers there. What does not work is one page duplicated with the town name swapped, which is what most of your competitors are doing badly.

Route three: reviews that name the place

When a customer in another town leaves a review, they often mention where they are. That is genuine, local, third-party text connecting you to that place.

You cannot script it, and you can ask customers in outlying towns for reviews as a deliberate priority rather than an afterthought.

Route four: assistants

AI recommendations are far less bound by proximity than the map pack, which makes this the most open lane currently available to a business that travels.

What it needs is exactly what routes one to three produce: plain statements of where you work, corroborated by sources other than yourself.

Common questions

How can a contractor rank in more than one city?

Through a real presence in each place, through service pages that genuinely address each town rather than swapping a city name, and through being mentioned by sources connected to those places. The map pack is largely closed to you without a real location there.

Do location pages still work for contractors?

Pages that contain real local substance do. Pages generated by find-and-replace on a city name do not, and there are a lot of them, which is precisely why a genuinely local page stands out.

Can I use a virtual office to rank in another city?

It is against the rules and a well-known cause of suspension. The risk is not only losing the second listing, it is losing the profile that your actual business depends on.

What is the fastest legitimate way to appear in nearby towns?

Name them explicitly on your site, publish work you have genuinely done there with photographs, and ask customers in those towns for reviews that mention where the job was. All three are honest and all three are readable by both search engines and assistants.
