Local
Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps?
This is one of the most common and most frustrating problems for a local business, and the causes are a short list rather than a mystery.
First, check it properly
Before diagnosing anything, stop searching from your own phone. You are logged in, standing at your own address, with a history of looking at your own listing. Google is showing you a personalised result nobody else sees.
Check in a private window, and ask somebody in another part of the city to search the same term. People discover their real position this way and it is often not what they assumed.
1. Is the profile verified
An unverified profile has limited visibility, and a suspended one has none. Both are common and neither announces itself loudly.
If verification failed or is stuck, that is its own problem with its own fixes, covered in what to do when verification keeps failing.
2. Is the primary category right
The primary category does an enormous amount of work in deciding which searches you are eligible for.
Businesses routinely pick something that describes them accurately but that nobody searches for. The test is not whether the category is true, it is whether it matches the words a customer would type.
3. Is the service area set correctly
Service-area businesses often list an enormous region hoping to appear everywhere in it. That is not how it works, and an unrealistically wide area does not extend reach.
Set it to where you genuinely work.
4. Are there duplicates
Old listings, listings created by a previous owner, or ones auto-generated from other data sources all compete with your real profile and split the signals between them.
Search your business name and address variations. Duplicates are more common than people expect, particularly for businesses that have moved.
5. Distance
This is the one nobody wants to hear. Proximity matters a great deal in local results, and visibility tends to fall away sharply outside your immediate area.
If your complaint is that you do not appear across the city, that may be working as intended rather than broken. How far you can realistically rank covers what to do about it.
Common questions
Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?
The usual causes are an unverified or suspended profile, a category that does not match what people search for, a service area set incorrectly, duplicate listings competing with each other, or simply being outside the radius where Google will show you for that search. They are checkable in that order.
Why can I see my business but customers cannot?
Because you are searching while logged in, from your own location, with a history of visiting your own listing. Personalised results show you a version nobody else gets. Always check in a private window and ideally from another city.
Does distance affect whether I appear on Google Maps?
Heavily. Proximity is one of the strongest factors in local results, and businesses generally find their visibility drops off sharply outside their immediate area. It is the single biggest reason a business appears for people nearby and vanishes across town.
How do I fix a business that never appears on Google Maps?
Verify the profile, set the primary category to the one customers actually search, make the service area accurate rather than aspirational, remove duplicate listings, and get reviews consistently. Those five resolve the majority of cases.
